If you thought last night that I was holding with the girl you were wrong – in fact I felt too nervouse to say anything much. If I SAID this to you, you would nor believe me, but anyhow surely, you do not think I would WRITE a lie.

Whatever I may have appeared to you, please old Mannie, believe me when I tell you that I honestly had no intention of acting contrary to you, or of leaving you to stand alone.

Whatever I have done or said I pray you to forgive it – I have had such a dreadful day.
